Take one part WWII movie a la Saving Private Ryan and one part grindhouse akin to Re-Animator, slap em together snd you've got the insane B-movie mayhem of Overlord. It makes for an extremely good time at the movies and a surprisingly well-made mash-up of old-fashion war movie tropes and proudly disgusting horror-flick shocks. It’s a ton of fun.
The movie starts as, an extremely brutal I might add, WWII movie, until the second half when the squad starts off on their mission and make a horrifying discovery: In the tunnels under their mission, the Nazis are conducting experiments to resurrect the dead and turn them into a breed of super-soldiers for the Führer. “The thousand-year Reich needs thousand-year soldiers!” From this point on its pure horror.
The film has a great young cast, excellent pacing, and a premise that is great, and original. It's a B-movie on purpose, and handles itself as such, which makes for a violent, explosive, fun ride. It'll take you back to sitting on your couch in 2008 playing Call of Duty: Nazi Zombies, but don't worry, its not as cut and dry as that.
All in all, if this movie is your kind of thing, and you know if it is, you're going to love it. But, with that being said its not for everyone.
I'm giving it a 7.5/10
OVERLORD is rated R for strong language, adult themes, and extreme violence and gore ( do not take the kids to this one people)
